How to choose an SEO app or plugin
Updated Oct 12, 2026.
Do I need an SEO app at all?
Not for the basics. Shopify says every store handles canonical tags, a sitemap and a robots.txt file on its own, and its themes write title tags and product structured data (Shopify Help Center). Every WordPress site has had an XML sitemap since version 5.5 (WordPress Core).
Our guides to what Shopify does for free and what WordPress and WooCommerce do for free list the rest. Pay for an app when it does something on neither list.
Check what it does to your store’s speed
To earn the Built for Shopify badge, an app “must not reduce the storefront Lighthouse performance score by more than ten points” (Shopify). Shopify measures that score on a store’s home page, a product page and a collection page, weighted 17%, 40% and 43%, on “a clean install of a supported Shopify theme” with no other apps (Shopify). So the badge says the app met that limit on a clean theme.
We test the Shopify apps we review the same way, and a tested listing gives the change in that score. Your store has its own theme and apps, so check its speed after you install anything.
Ask how it changes your theme
Shopify says apps built with its theme app extensions “don’t edit theme code” (Shopify). Before you install an app, ask its developer whether it uses them or writes into your theme files.
For each Shopify app we test, we compare the theme’s files before it’s installed and after it’s removed, and the listing says whether the app left anything behind.
Keep one set of product markup
Shopify’s themes already add product structured data, and WooCommerce has written its product structured data as JSON-LD since version 3.0 (WooCommerce). If an app adds its own on top, a product page describes the same product twice. Keep one of the two, and check a product page with Google’s Rich Results Test.
Read the price the way you’ll pay it
Shopify requires every app in its App Store “to use a Shopify provided billing solution”. With Shopify App Pricing, “charges are directly added to the merchant’s Shopify invoice”, and plans can be free, billed monthly or yearly, or charged by usage (Shopify). Before you pick a plan, check whether usage charges come on top of it. Every price we list says whether it’s billed monthly or is the monthly cost of a yearly plan, with the day we checked it.
