What Shopify already does for SEO, for free
Updated Oct 12, 2026.
Every Shopify store handles the basics of technical SEO without an app, and many SEO apps sell features that overlap with them. Check what your store already does before you install one.
What every store does on its own
Shopify’s SEO overview lists what stores handle automatically (Shopify Help Center):
- Canonical tags, which tell search engines the main address of a page.
- A sitemap.xml file, which search engines read to find your pages.
- A robots.txt file, which tells crawlers what to skip.
- Title tags, which your theme writes from your page and product titles.
- Product structured data from your theme.
Shopify also lists Shopify Magic for product descriptions as a built-in feature in its App Store (Shopify App Store), so you may not need a separate app to draft product copy.
What Shopify added for AI shopping assistants
Shopify’s Winter ’26 Edition introduced agentic storefronts for ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot (Shopify). Shopify’s guide to agentic commerce now says “Agentic Storefronts is automatically activated for eligible merchants”, that eligible products “are listed in Shopify Catalog by default”, and that you manage these AI channels in your Shopify admin under Settings > Sales Channels > Agentic Storefronts (Shopify blog).
On October 6, 2026 we checked three Shopify stores of different sizes. All three served a Shopify-generated /agents.md file and listed an agentic discovery sitemap in their sitemap.xml. The two whose /llms.txt we could load served Shopify’s own version.
Shopify’s free Product Page Audit for Agentic Commerce checks the structured data AI agents read, though Shopify notes that it doesn’t guarantee your products will be shown (Shopify).
Two checks before you install an SEO app
- Look for duplicate product markup. Your theme probably adds product structured data already. A merchant thread from July 2026 describes what often happens next: an SEO app adds its own, leaving “Two Product entities on the same page” (Shopify Community). If an app adds product markup, keep one of the two.
- Ask what an llms.txt or “AI visibility” feature adds. Shopify now serves its own
/llms.txtand/agents.md, so an app that sells these files should explain what it does beyond Shopify’s default.
