How to choose a rank tracker

Updated Oct 9, 2026.

Start with Search Console

Google Search Console is “a free service offered by Google” (Google Search Console Help), and its Performance report gives your average position: “the topmost position occupied by a link to your property or page in search results, averaged across all queries in which your property appeared” (Google Search Console Help). It only records a position when your result gets an impression, so if your page is on the third page of results and the searcher only looks at the first, no position is recorded for that search.

A rank tracker checks the keywords you choose on the schedule its plan sets, whether or not anyone saw your result that day. Pay for one when you need that, or when you want to follow competitors’ positions too.

Expect your own search to differ

Google says your position “might be different than the average because of many variables, such as your search history, location, and so on” (Google Search Console Help), and that it uses “your location, past Search history, and Search settings” to decide what’s most relevant to you (Google). Searching for yourself may not show where other people see you. Check that a tracker lets you set the location and device it checks from.

Watch positions over time

Google warns that “a position number can mean different things in different situations”, and recommends that you “monitor change in position over time, particularly sudden position changes, as well as absolute position” (Google Search Console Help). So check how often a tracker updates and how much history it keeps.

Price it at the keywords you’ll track

Rank trackers’ plans set limits on how many keywords they track, how often they update, and how many users and websites you get. Where a tracker’s plans state how many keywords they track, its pricing page here works out the cost at 100 tracked keywords. Every price says whether it’s billed monthly or is the monthly cost of a yearly plan, and the day we checked it.

For a local business, track by area

Google says distance is one of the three main factors in local results, with relevance and prominence (Google Business Profile Help). Google measures distance from the person searching, so where you rank can change from one part of your area to another, and a local business should look at trackers that check from several points in it. Our local SEO tools page covers trackers built for local businesses.
